Every great league has fixtures that mean a little more. The ones where the players know each other, the members drink at the same bar and the result is still being talked about at work on Monday. In football they are called derbies, and the 2027 Bear Digital Cup Series is already full of them. Welcome to the padel derby.
Some are sister clubs under the same brand. Some are neighbours a short drive apart. One is a pair of clubs from the same brand at opposite ends of the city. Here are the seven padel derbies we are most looking forward to, how the draw decides whether they happen and a few tactics for anyone playing in one.
The biggest padel derbies in the 2027 Cup Series are Padel 365 Century City v Richmond Park, Atlantic Padel Sunningdale v Parklands, Padel X v Virgin Active Padel Club – Lourensford in Somerset West, The Racket + Ball Club v Virgin Active Padel Club – Epicentre in the city, the Virgin Active derby between Lourensford and Epicentre, the Koeberg corridor between Aura and the Padel 365 clubs, and Welgemoed v Eden in the northern suburbs. They only happen in the group stage if the seeded draw puts both clubs in the same group.
First, how a padel derby actually works
A Cup Series fixture is not one match, it is six. When two clubs meet, their squads play each other in all six divisions, Men’s and Women’s Premier, Challenger and Social, and every one of those matches is played at the home club’s venue on the same Saturday afternoon.
Each match is two sets with golden point scoring, followed by a 10-point tiebreak that is played every time. A win is worth 3 points in that division’s table and winning the tiebreak earns a bonus point, so a club can take up to 4 points from each of the six matches. A derby is really six derbies at once, with bragging rights in every division. The full format guide explains the scoring in detail.
The seven derbies to watch
The Padel 365 derby

Two clubs, one owner and a lot of pride. Century City is the 10th Founder Club and Richmond Park the league’s 11th club, and the two are a short drive apart north of the city. They co-hosted the first Growthpoint SA National Padel Championships in October 2026, so both sets of players are used to big occasions.
What to watch: Both venues have five indoor courts with Capture streaming and replay on every one, so expect this to be the best-filmed derby in the league. Century City’s championship court is Court 3 Growthpoint; Richmond Park’s is the Santam Championship Court.
The Atlantic derby

Atlantic Padel’s story started at Table View Tennis Club in 2022, and it entered two Founder Clubs at once: Sunningdale at the Berkshire Boulevard Convenience Centre and Parklands at Rivergate. Members pay one annual fee for 20% off at any Atlantic Padel venue, so plenty of players will know both clubs inside out.
What to watch: Local knowledge cancels out here. With both squads familiar with each other’s courts, this one comes down to who handles the pressure of the 10-point tiebreak.
The Helderberg derby

Two of the very first clubs to enter the league, a short drive apart in Somerset West. Padel X plays on four indoor Drop Shot panoramic courts at Somerset Crossing; Lourensford plays inside a wine estate with the Helderberg mountains behind the net. Two very different settings, one postcode.
What to watch: Padel X is also the Finals Weekend venue on 1 May, so a Lourensford squad that wins at Padel X in the group stage takes a very useful dress rehearsal home with it.
The city derby

The city centre against the harbour, about ten minutes apart. The Racket + Ball Club turned a former newspaper parking garage on Bree Street into four indoor courts in December 2023. The Epicentre, in Paarden Eiland, opened in 2022 as South Africa’s first multi-court indoor padel centre. Both are busy, social, after-work clubs.
What to watch: Bree Street’s courts carry supercar names, with the Rolls Royce Centre Court as the showpiece. The Epicentre has five courts, including a singles court, under one roof.
The Virgin Active derby

Not neighbours at all: Lourensford is in a Somerset West wine estate and the Epicentre is by the harbour. But they share a name, a brand, which is often all a rivalry needs. Since Epic Padel partnered with Virgin Active in 2023, the Epicentre has carried the same Virgin Active Padel Club name as Lourensford, and Virgin Active members get 20% off at both.
What to watch: This is the longest away trip of any derby in this guide, so the away squads’ travel and warm-up planning really matters.
The Koeberg corridor

Three of the league’s biggest indoor clubs sit within a short drive of each other: Aura off Koeberg Road in Montague Gardens, and the two Padel 365 clubs in Century City and Richmond Park. Between them they have fifteen indoor courts, and all three film every court.
What to watch: Aura’s Centre Court has more than three metres of run-out and its own grandstand. If Aura draws either Padel 365 club at home, that is where you want to be sitting.
The northern suburbs derby

A leafy two-court club in Welgemoed against four purple indoor courts on the slopes of Durbanville Hills. Welgemoed was one of the first three clubs to enter; Eden was the ninth. The style of the two venues could hardly be more different, which is exactly what makes a derby fun.
What to watch: Welgemoed’s courts sit in the open, under the trees; Eden is fully indoors. Away squads at each venue face very different conditions, so the warm-up matters more than usual.
Honourable mentions
- Atlantic Padel – Parklands v Padel 365 – Richmond Park: where the West Coast meets Milnerton.
- Aura Padel Club v VAPC – Epicentre: two of the city’s best-equipped indoor clubs, either side of the N1.
- Any club v Padel X at Finals Weekend: for every squad that gets there, the knockout rounds on 1 May are the biggest away day of the season.
Tactics for padel derby day
A padel derby is tight, emotional and often decided by small things. A few habits help, whether you are at home or away.
How to follow the derbies
The seeded draw and full fixture list follow by 7 January 2027, and every fixture will appear on the Fixtures page and on each club’s page. The season starts on Saturday, 6 February 2027 and every fixture is played on a Saturday between 12pm and 3pm, so derby day is a perfect afternoon out for supporters.

Frequently asked questions
What is a padel derby in the Cup Series?
A fixture between two clubs with a natural rivalry, such as sister clubs under the same brand or neighbours a short drive apart. Like every fixture, it is six matches, one in each division.
Are the derbies guaranteed?
No. A seeded draw splits clubs into Groups A and B, and clubs only play teams in their own group. A derby happens in the group stage only if both clubs are drawn in the same group.
Can rivals from different groups still meet?
Yes. The Finals Weekend quarter-finals are cross-group (A1 v B4, B2 v A3, B1 v A4, A2 v B3), so two clubs from different groups can meet on 1 May 2027.
Where are derby matches played?
At the home club’s venue. All six division matches of a fixture are played there on the same Saturday afternoon.
When will the derby dates be known?
When the full fixture list is published after the draw, by 7 January 2027.
How many points is a derby worth?
Each of the six matches is worth up to 4 points in its division’s table: 3 for the win and 1 for winning the 10-point tiebreak.
